The two nicks!!

A phrase that was coined in May 2024 and seems to have stuck

Prior to March 2024 The Two Nicks hadn’t even met and roll on 13 months they have both been on quite a journey together, starting off wandering about with a couple of shovels and rakes thinking that they would have the site ready within 6 weeks and open to the public (slightly ambitious) considering that the site had been left for 5 years and was slightly overgrown. Let alone the lack of health and safety measures, no access to the bar or even a bar!!!! The second phrase coined by The Two Nicks which has probably been said the most ‘What are we doing’ given the task ahead!

An opportune moment and chance meeting by these two now good friends has created a chance to save local history……

a brief history of the fort….

Paull Cliffe Battery was built in 1541 on the orders of Henry VIII to protect the entrance to the Humber and Hull. In 1642 the battery was partially destroyed by parliamentarian ships sailing up the Humber to relieve the siege of Hull, at the same time Paull Church was damaged with shots aimed for the Fort. In 1808 the battery was re-built during the Napoleonic war and dismantled circa 1815.

Paull Point Battery was built between 1861-1864 as part of the Palmerston defences of the major ports. It was occupied by the Royal Artillery and was armed with 19 guns for the protection of the river.

In the second world war the battery served predominantly as an ammunition storage facility, utilising the original magazines to supply ammunition to the merchant ships and the barracks were converted into magazines for anti-aircraft ammunition.

The name Fort Paull was given for commercial purposes.
